Texas is hoping to kick it up a notch on the recruiting trail, primarily in the trenches.
The offensive and defensive lines for the Longhorns have been weak spots this season. In reality, certain position groups aren’t expected to thrive right off the bat under a new coaching staff.
That’s why landing blue-chip recruits this year and next are crucial for the future of Texas’ football program under Steve Sarkisian’s staff. Once they’re able to bring in the type of players that fit what they’re looking to do, success will come — and to be expected.
One player that Texas is in the mix for on the defensive side is four-star Kelby Collins. The 6-foot-5 defensive lineman is rated the No. 5 overall prospect from the state of Alabama in the 2023 recruiting class. At his position, he ranks as the No. 12 defensive lineman according to 247Sports.
Collins released the top eight schools on Thursday, with Texas making the cut alongside Alabama, Clemson, Texas A&M, Florida, Georgia, Auburn and South Carolina.

The Gardendale High School product recorded 85 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, four sacks, and one forced fumble in 2020.
Texas extended an offer to Collins on August 10. At this time, the only program to receive a visit is the Florida Gators.
