Former Tennessee basketball player Major Wingate dies at 37.

Former University of Tennessee basketball player Major Wingate has died.

He was 37.

Wingate played for the Volunteers between 2003-06 and was a captain for Tennessee during his junior season.

During his three-year career in Knoxville, Wingate appeared in 89 games and made 52 starts.

He was a captain for the Vols as a junior during the first season of Bruce Pearl’s tenure as head coach.

Wingate averaged 10.6 points, four rebounds, 1.1 assists and one block per game during his junior season when Tennessee went 22-8 and won the SEC East division championship.

Following his time with the Vols, he played professional basketball in Turkey, France, China, Romania and Puerto Rico.
