The race for the final American League postseason spots truly went down to the last game. In fact, everything was set up nicely for the ultimate chaos of a four-way tie between Toronto, New York, Boston and Seattle.
But, of course, the Yankees and Red Sox had to ruin all of that.
The Blue Jays’ wild card hopes hinged on taking care of business against the Orioles and hoping for either a Boston or New York loss. That would’ve been enough to force a Game 163, and for most of the afternoon, the scoreboard-watching was falling in place for Toronto. The Nationals had a four-run lead over Boston. The Blue Jays easily beat Baltimore.
Then, Rafael Devers happened.
