Sacramento Kings rookie Davion Mitchell has been busy putting in work in the gym ahead of the start of the 2021-22 season. In fact, Mitchell has been training so much that the team has started to limit his workout time.
Kings guard Tyrese Haliburton hilariously made the revelation this week to reporters when he was asked about his rookie teammate. The most striking thing about Mitchell, Haliburton said, was how hard he works on the court and in the gym.
“I think he works so hard that it’s no surprise why he is where he is and has had the success he has had in his basketball career,” Haliburton said. “So, that’s refreshing for me to see a guy working like that. It makes me work harder and I hope everybody sees that and it works that way for everybody.”
Mitchell has been busy adjusting to his new team ahead of training camp next week. Much of the team has been in Sacramento recently and Mitchell has even had the opportunity to run in some pickup games with Haliburton and De’Aaron Fox.
Part of the adjustment of transitioning to the NBA game is the 82-game schedule. Mitchell played in only 30 games last season, as Baylor won the national championship, so the Kings want to limit his training time to ensure he is fresh for the long season.
He is still trying to make that adjustment and limit his workout time.
“They be telling me to go home but I feel like I just have to work on so many things,” Mitchell said. “They be telling me to get out of the gym, go get some rest. It’s 82 games, I’ve never played this long of a season before so they are kinda helping me out a little bit but there are so many things I want to work on. But, yeah, they be running me out of here.”

Mitchell pointed to the amount of free time he now has in the NBA. He maintained a pretty busy schedule in college between classes and practices and is beginning to understand he can’t spend every free minute that he has in the gym.
Certainly, it is never a bad trait to want to constantly work out. However, Mitchell will have to find a balance between training time and resting, especially with training camp starting next week.
By all accounts, though, the work ethic displayed by Mitchell has really resonated with his teammates.
