The Bills were just taking some extra precaution with cornerback Levi Wallace, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

On Monday, one day following his team’s 35-0 win over the Miami Dolphins, the coach said Wallace was not seriously injured. Wallace went down in the second quarter with a cramp but stayed out and only played 26 snaps.

Simply put, McDermott and the coaching staff just felt OK without his services.

“We didn’t need to have him back out there at the time,” McDermott said via press conference. “We just wanted to play it on the safe side.”

That announcement by the coach came after a report surfaced earlier Monday that the Bills were working out cornerback Quinton Dunbar. The veteran was released by the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason, and he was said to be having that session for the Bills sometime this week.

On Monday’s NFL transaction wire, the workout did not yet appear.

To Wallace’s credit, in the first half of the game, he did have the Bills’ first interception of the season. In addition, his team went up 14-0 in the first half so McDermott was right in terms of not exactly needing him.

If you can manage to let a starter sit… why not?

In that spot, second-year pro Dane Jackson stepped in.

On Dunbar, there’s a possibility he could also be worked out as a possible depth addition to the roster or practice squad as well. Out of training camp, the Bills only kept five corners in their final 53-man roster.
