Jameis Winston earned the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback job, and it wasn’t too hard to see why. Winston led the conference in passer rating, posting a 124.8 (Denver Broncos backup Drew Lock paced the AFC with a 138.7). And that helped fuel the Saints to lead the NFC in total offense (367.5 yards) and passing yards per game (289).

All told, Winston completed 16 of 22 combined passes through two games, gaining 219 yards through the air while scoring three touchdowns against one interception. That’s a cumulated completion percentage of 72.7% and 9.9 yards per pass attempt. Not too shabby.

But let’s see if it transfers to the regular season. After all, Lock’s own high-flying performance wasn’t enough to wrest the Broncos starting job from his better-experienced teammate Teddy Bridgewater. Hopefully this efficiency and knack for big plays is a good sign for the start of Winston’s time behind the wheel in New Orleans.
