Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger suffered a sprained knee during the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on Friday night and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Ehlinger left the preseason finale just a few plays after coming in to relieve Jacob Eason. While head coach Frank Reich said the injury didn’t look good, the team was waiting on more information before determining a timeline.
Fortunately, it seems as though Ehlinger avoided a serious injury and this could be the best-case scenario, especially since he is avoiding surgery.
Can confirm that Sam Ehlinger sprained his knee and will be out from 4 to 6 weeks, per source

With Ehlinger out at least a month, this confirms Eason will be the backup to starter Carson Wentz. It likely was heading that way before the injury, but this confirms it.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the roster. Ehlinger won’t be cut, but there is a chance they place him on the injured reserve list to return after a few weeks. If they do that, he must be on the active roster when the final cuts are made. Then, after Sept. 1, the Colts can move him to either the injured reserve or PUP list.
