The Steve Sarkisian era at Texas will officially kick off on Sept. 4 against a ranked opponent.
This will mark the first time since 1984 that the Longhorns will open the season with both teams ranked. No. 21 Texas will host No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial stadium to begin the 2021 season.
Outside of their season opener, Texas could eventually face three or four ranked opponents within the Big 12 this year. Oklahoma and Iowa State are essentially locks to be ranked, while Oklahoma State and TCU could squeeze into the top 25 at some point.
Texas is seemingly a mystery at this point. With a new coaching staff in place and an inexperienced quarterback behind center, no one is quite sure how they will look.
With Texas beginning the season against a ranked opponent, Longhorns Wire decided to look at how Sarkisian has fared as a head coach against ranked opponents in the past.
Overall, Sarkisian is 11-20 vs. ranked opponents as a head coach at the collegiate level. Against top five opponents, he’s 1-5. The lone win came in 2009 when Washington defeated No. 3 USC.
