His time with the New York Giants may have been defined so far by running through drills without a cleat during minicamp, but that’s mostly because Kadarius Toney hasn’t shown much else so far. The 20th overall pick missed a lot of action during minicamp for a range of reasons, including contract disputes and family emergencies.
Training camp is underway, but Toney has still been limited. He missed the first five full-team practices as he recovered from COVID-19, and his first catch in live team drills came Saturday. Coach Joe Judge said the team is cautious when bringing back players who test positive for the virus.
“It’s very different for everybody,” coach Joe Judge said of COVID-19, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “Some guys it’s more head colds, some guys it’s more lungs. So if you bring him back, some guys jump back on the field … other guys you can tell the enthusiasm is there [but] they don’t have their wind yet or legs.”
Toney said that he isn’t worried about the missed time.
“I mean, I feel good. I’m good,” he said. “Am I behind? No, I feel like I’m getting better every day, learning the playbook day by day more.”
According to Raanan, Toney hasn’t done much to stand out when he’s managed to be on the field in team drills, but the Giants are hopeful he will catch up soon. Receivers coach Tyke Tolbert said that Toney is attentive in meetings and asking questions.
Toney was drafted to be an immediate impact player in the passing game to aid in the development of quarterback Daniel Jones. Though he has the talent, he’ll need to find a way to stay on the field once the season starts.
