Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes‘ 2020 season certainly didn’t have the happiest of endings, what with the postseason toe injury and then scrambling for his life in the Super Bowl blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Below, we look at Patrick Mahomes’ 2021 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should select him.
Fantasy-wise, Mahomes’ 2020 season was another smashing success. He notched his third straight top-10 quarterback finish and wound up only fractions of a point behind the Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen in terms of the highest average fantasy points per game among QBs who played more than five games.
Patrick Mahomes’ ADP: 6.81 overall

Only elite running backs Christian McCaffrey (Carolina Panthers, ADP: 1.72), Dalvin Cook (Minnesota Vikings, ADP: 4.04) and Alvin Kamara (New Orleans Saints, ADP: 6.27) are being selected ahead of Mahomes, on average, so far this summer.
Now, sure, two-quarterback and Superflex league data is included here, but Mahomes is the only QB being drafted in the first round, on average, further cementing his status as the most coveted fantasy quarterback for three years running, now.
Allen (average pick of 12.80), the Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray (16.50) and Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (18.33) are next in line by quarterback ADP.

Where should you take Patrick Mahomes in your fantasy football draft?
Of course, if you’re in a two-quarterback or Superflex league, Mahomes is an automatic upper half of the first-round consideration. That’s even before noting his toe looks to be completely healed and the Chiefs’ offensive line issues have been addressed via a number of notable offseason additions, including OT Orlando Brown Jr. and G Joe Thuney. And, oh yes, elite weapons TE Travis Kelce and WR Tyreek Hill still call K.C. home.
If you’re among the majority carefully mapping out a draft plan in one-QB 12- or 10-team leagues, fantasy quarterback depth must be taken into account. The top nine fantasy QBs all averaged between 25.6 and 29.1 fantasy points per game and the top 22 QBs averaged at least 20 points.
Elite talent is thinner and the drop-offs are more pronounced at other positions — most notably at running back — so, yes, it’s time for the long-standing fantasy industry mantra: Wait on QB.
If you just have to have Mahomes, though, you’re likely going to have to pounce early in the second round. Ideally, though, finding him still on the board at the tail-end of the second or early in the third is the perfect time to make your move.
