The Bills certainly have benefited from keeping pieces in place on their coaching staff in recent years. Despite Brian Daboll winning Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020, he’s still moving forward as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator. This continuity is big for an offense, namely quarterback Josh Allen.
However, Allen evidently is just fine with… cutting him out at times, according to wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Breaking down his connection with the quarterback, Diggs said sometimes Allen keeps it simple with him. The QB tells the wideout to just get open no matter what, and the receiver explained how much that takes.
“I like to buy into a process, and I want to blend in as much as I can and let my play stand out,” Diggs said this week via D.C. Magazine. “This is going to sound crazy, but I’m a by-the-book guy. (Allen) will just look at me and say, ‘Stef, just get open and catch the ball. I really don’t care what you do before that.’ And that’s hard to hear because I’m so used to timing routes and doing things in a certain type of way. But this is where the creativity comes in. I can mix things up a little bit, and the quarterback trusts me. The only way you can build that trust is by making plays.”
While Diggs might have been uncomfortable with that… he clearly was fine in the end. He led the NFL with 127 receptions and 1,535 yards in his first season with the Bills, earning All-Pro honors along the way.
Not a bad start.
In 2021, Allen and Diggs will look to build upon these numbers, but the team-based goals will take centerstage after Buffalo’s loss in the AFC title game. While Diggs is not attending voluntary OTAs this week, Allen is, and the quarterback said he’s ready to surpass that after falling a few plays short.
“I was excited just because I know the group that we have here. I’m excited just to be back to go to war with them so we can all try to accomplish what we all here to do – and that’s to win a championship,” Allen said via video conference.
