LOOK: Giants’ Sterling Shepard changes to single-digit number

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard changes his number to a single digit.

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard is getting a new look.

The team and wideout himself both confirmed on social media on Tuesday that he’s changing his number. Previously wearing No. 87 with the Giants, Sterling will now dawn the number he wore in college at Oklahoma, No. 3.

In order to change his number, Shepard has to purchase the inventory of his old jersey, according to the new number-related rules agreed upon by the league and players’ union earlier this offseason. Per Art Stapleton of The Record, doing so was evidently “not as costly as perhaps was anticipated.”

In college, Shepard wore the No. 3 to honor his late father, Derrick, who also played at Oklahoma. His father then ended up moving to No. 87 in the pros and Shepard ended up with the same number by coincidence he previously told The Oklahoman. It appears the 28-year-old wanted to return to his original roots with the single-digit now.
