Dolphins signing veteran defensive back Jason McCourty

The Miami Dolphins’ secondary has endured quite the makeover over the course of the last week. Miami entered the 2021 offseason with one of the NFL’s most expensive secondaries — and the opportunity to bring everyone back into the fray once more for the 2021 season. But continuity isn’t always a good thing, particularly when the financials and production are misaligned in the NFL.

The Dolphins drafted Oregon safety Jevon Holland with the No. 36 overall pick one week ago to the day before bringing in former 1st-round pick Malik Hooker for a visit earlier in the week. Hooker did not sign, but the Dolphins still made the decision to part ways with veteran Bobby McCain yesterday.

But Miami isn’t done with their revamped secondary just yet; as they’ve doubled down on fresh faces by agreeing to terms with former New England Patriots defender Jason McCourty.

McCourty, a veteran of 12 years in the league who has played with Tennessee, Cleveland and New England, has played in 166 career games and logged 18 career interceptions to go with 109 career passes defensed.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are apparently receptive to him taking reps at safety in addition to cornerback this season.

“Dolphins, in signing Jason McCourty, left open with him the possibility of using him at corner and safety, per source. One-year deal. Could back up Howard and Byron Jones, and also compete with Holland to replace McCain and Brandon Jones free safety,” wrote Jackson.

Between the additions of Holland, McCourty and Justin Coleman this offseason, the Dolphins appear to have ample depth to tackle the season ahead and not compromise their versatility on the back end of the defense.
