In most cases, I will listen to the analysis from Peter Schrager of the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” show and see the value in his opinions.
In Schrager’s latest mock draft, however, his choice for the New York Giants in the first round of next week’s NFL draft is a long shot at best and highly unlikely.
Round 1, Pick 11: New York Giants – Jaycee Horn, cornerback, South Carolina
Don’t be shocked if the Giants go cornerback here. Yes, they have Adoree’ Jackson and James Bradberry on the roster, but you can never have enough top-level CBs. Horn is viewed as just that. Giants fans may bristle at the team taking a corner over a WR, OT or pass rusher — but I would not be surprised at all if it’s Patrick Surtain or Horn.
OK, Schrager redeemed himself a little bit there at the end by mentioning Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II, who he has going 10th to Dallas.
The first reason for the Giants to pass on Horn in this mock draft is the fact that Northwestern offensive lineman Rashawn Slater and Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith are still on the board.
The second reason would be optics. Jaycee Horn is the son of former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Joe Horn. For those of you who don’t remember Joe Horn, here’s a reminder. The senior Horn embarrassed the Giants on national television in 2003. The Giants have a long memory.

Naturally, the actions of the father should not reflect on the son but why bring this kid here to be bombarded with those questions and put more pressure on him?
But the real factor for passing on Horn is there are better players on the board at No. 11.
If the Giants did select Horn, they would open themselves up to another controversy. Horn could potentially beat out Adoree’ Jackson for the starting corner spot, meaning the Giants didn’t need to pay Jackson $39 million ($26 million guaranteed) over the next three seasons.
So, it’s not very likely that Horn will be the Giants’ pick in Round 1.
