UGA Soccer: Georgia and Florida square off in Atlanta

The Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators met in Atlanta for a rivalry soccer match.

The Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators soccer squads met on Monday in Atlanta for a rivalry match.

After 110 minutes of play, which included two overtime periods, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Georgia fired 13 shots, with eight landing on target, while Florida put eight of its 10 strikes on frame.

Both goals came early – within the first 15 minutes. Defensive midfielder Ashley Andersen got the Dawgs on the board first with a goal in the fourth minute. Abby Boyan delivered the assist.

Georgia goalkeeper Emory Wegener recorded six saves on the day.

“Really appreciate Florida meeting us here in Atlanta, a long trip for them and a weather change with a lot of uncertainty this week,” said head coach Billy Lesene. “It was a good opportunity to play against a very good team, so I thought the result was pretty fair. Both teams played hard and well, good to stretch us a bit with an overtime. We grew today and we look forward to playing at home. We have one less day than anticipated for recovery, so we’ll get home and ready to play against Wake Forest on Saturday.”

Georgia held its 1-0 lead for 11 minutes until Florida’s Beata Olsson scored in the 15th.

After two overtime periods, the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

Georgia will meet Wake Forest this Saturday at 11 a.m. in what will be its last home match of the season.
