Hold onto your hats, things have not gone very well for Big Ten teams in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
While they call it March Madness for a reason, though the Big Ten was widely regarded as the best conference in college basketball, all but two of the nine teams included in the big dance have been eliminated already, and no Big Ten teams have advanced to the Sweet 16 as of yet.
So it all comes down to either 1-seed Michigan or 10-seed Maryland.
2-seed Ohio State, 4-seed Purdue, 1-seed Illinois and 2-seed Iowa have all been bounced in upsets, with some more emphatic than others. The Buckeyes lost to 15-seed Oral Roberts, who survived and advanced past Florida after beating OSU in the first round. Illinois managed to get ousted on Sunday by 8-seed Loyola Chicago, Purdue lost to North Texas and Iowa was blown out by 7-seed Oregon. Now the Wolverines are set to take on 8-seed LSU on Monday night, after the Tigers beat 9-seed St. Bonaventure.
The maize and blue have the unenviable task of taking on one of the nation’s most prolific offenses — rated No. 5 nationally by KenPom — without Isaiah Livers, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury. However, our friends over at BetMGM still anticipate that the Wolverines will prevail, as they are favored by 5-points. The money line for Michigan is set at -225 and the over/under is set at 148.5 points.
LSU is sitting at 19-9 record-wise, and has wins over teams such as Arkansas (two wins, one loss), Missouri and Tennessee. However, the Tigers have lost to Alabama, a current 2-seed, three times and has also lost to Florida in the sole game against the Gators.
