Texas has always been a program that recruits well, even with poor results on the field.
Tom Herman bagged consecutive top five classes (2018, 2019) and another top 10 (2020) before a drop off in 2021. Early in his tenure, Steve Sarkisian is bringing in similar results. After landing four-star safety Bryan Allen, the Longhorns moved to the No. 4 class in the 2022 rankings.
If you ask fans of rival teams, Sarkisian’s recruiting success is largely due to false hype surrounding a first-year head coach. The former Alabama offensive assistant was always going to haul in a good first class because people will always fall for an initial jolt in Texas momentum.
Here is how Texas’ class looks at this point:
Total No. of recruits: Seven
National ranking: No. 4
Big 12 rank: No. 1
Highest rated recruit: Maalik Murphy, QB, 0.9838
No. of in-state recruits: Six
Six other Power Five programs have brought in a new head coach. Arizona, Auburn, Illinois, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt all fired their coaches after the 2020 season ended. If Texas is experiencing an uptick in recruiting because of a new head coach, they must be too, right?
Longhorns Wire looked at how all six are fairing on the recruiting trail compared to Texas less than a month into the 2022 cycle.
