Spurs’ Devin Vassell ruled out on Wednesday due to health protocols

Spurs rookie Devin Vassell is one of five players ruled out of playing versus the Thunder due to health and safety protocols.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Devin Vassell is one of five players ruled out of playing on Wednesday versus the Oklahoma City Thunder due to health and safety protocols, the team announced.

The Spurs have not played since posting a win over the Charlotte Hornets on Feb. 14 due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the team, with multiple players on the roster reportedly testing positive for the virus. Some of those players have not been able to return to the team due to NBA rules.

The organization has also dealt with extreme weather conditions that affected much of the state of Texas last week. Thousands of homes were damaged and many were left without power as temperatures plummeted to near freezing in some areas.

“We are doing well, just moving on,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said on Monday. “A tough break for us but not near as difficult as many, many, many here in the state of Texas have had to endure. We can’t complain.”

The team held a practice for the first time on Monday, with every healthy player on the roster participating. The team is also expected to be without DeMar DeRozan against the Thunder following the death of his father last week.

With six players out on Wednesday, the team recalled Luka Samanic and Tre Jones from the NBA G League.
