With Michigan football’s 2022 recruiting class, it always seems to be two steps forward and one step back. Such is the case, yet again, on Thursday evening.

At one point, Michigan had a commitment from Belleville (MI) four-star safety Myles Rowser — the brother of current cornerback Andre Seldon — before he eventually backed off his pledge. Then, months after he had committed to the 2022 class, four-star linebacker Tyler Martin — former high school teammate of current offensive lineman Zak Zinter — decommitted following Don Brown’s dismissal.

This time, it’s the first commitment of the class and another legacy-type.

2022 Essexville (MI) Garber’s Alex VanSumeren, the four-star defensive tackle and younger brother of current linebacker Ben VanSumeren, announced on Twitter that he’s backing off his verbal commitment and reopening his recruitment.

Michigan still has a defensive tackle pledged in the 2022 class in River Rouge (MI) three-star Davonte Miles.

With VanSumeren out, Michigan is back down to five commitments in 2022.
