Virginia at Virginia Tech: Three things to know
- Virginia defeated visiting Syracuse 81-58 Monday for a seventh-consecutive win. Senior forwards Sam Hauser and Jay Huff led the way with 21 points apiece, and the Cavaliers covered the spread as 7.5-point favorites. Hauser leads Virginia in scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounds (7.4 RPG), while junior G Kihei Clark averages a team-best 4.5 assists per game.
- Virginia Tech, which lost at Syracuse 78-60 as a 1-point underdog Jan. 23, rebounded with a 62-51 victory at Notre Dame Wednesday as a 1-point favorite. Sophomore G Nahiem Alleyne scored a team-high 15 points and junior F Keve Aluma added 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds vs. the Fighting Irish. For the season, Aluma averages team-bests in points (13.9 PPG) and rebounds (7.4 RPG).
- Virginia has won and covered the last four in the head-to-head series vs. Va. Tech. In the last meeting, the Cavs claimed a 56-53 road victory when Clark drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left Feb. 26, 2020. In last season’s first tilt – at Virginia – the Cavs’ defense shut down the Hokies 65-39 Jan. 4, 2020.

Virginia at Virginia Tech: Odds, lines, predictions and picks
Prediction
Virginia 58, Virginia Tech 57
Money line (ML)
PASS. Virginia Tech (+185) is tempting as the home team, but I’m going to pass and take the points below.
Against the spread (ATS)
VIRGINIA TECH +5.5 (-115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. This is a game you can bet the Hokies circled on their schedule as soon as it was released.
So far this season, the Hokies are 8-1 at home, only losing to Penn State 75-55 Dec. 8 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. They’re 4-0 in home conference games, including wins over Duke and Clemson, who were both ranked in the Top 25 at the time.
ATS: Virginia 8-5 | Virginia Tech 9-6
Over/Under (O/U)
Back the UNDER 123.5 (-110). Virginia’s defense ranks seventh in the country by allowing just 59.5 PPG. During the Cavaliers’ seven-game win streak, they’ve yielded 57.9 PPG.
In the Hokies’ last game, they held the Irish to 35.7% shooting from the field and 16.7% behind the 3-point line (3-for-18). If that defense comes close to duplicating what it did vs. Notre Dame, hitting the Under shouldn’t be a problem.
O/U records: Virginia 8-5 | Virginia Tech 9-6
