Pistons rookie Killian Hayes ruled out for eight weeks with hip injury

The seventh overall pick suffered a torn right labrum in his hip on Jan. 4 versus the Bucks.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Pistons announced that the right hip injury that Killian Hayes suffered on Jan. 4 versus the Milwaukee Bucks will not require surgery.

Hayes was diagnosed with a torn right labrum and the team said that further evaluation of the injury indicates the origin as a subluxation, which is a partial dislocation. He will be treated with rest and rehabilitation and will be re-evaluated in eight weeks.

The seventh overall pick appeared to initially suffer the injury attempting to defend a layup. He instead fell to the ground and immediately grabbed toward his right leg in visible discomfort.

The news that Hayes will avoid surgery was certainly an encouraging update considering that likely would have ended his season. The eight-week timeline would allow Hayes to return to play in the second half of the season if he does not experience any further setbacks.

Hayes is viewed as a significant building block for the future of the Pistons. The team prioritized his development and wanted to give him the opportunity to log heavy minutes this season to adjust to the NBA game and play through his mistakes.

The 19-year-old is averaging 4.6 points and 3.6 assists this season.
