Rivalry rumor: Could Ryan Day move on from Ohio State?

Could Michigan football’s rival be searching for a new head coach in short order?

Usually, it’s Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh being connected to NFL teams. This year, the rumor-mongering continued on that front while Harbaugh worked through contract extension negotiations. But could the coach of a rival be on the move?

Despite losing a blowout in the national championship game to Alabama on Monday, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has built upon what Urban Meyer left in Columbus. Day is 1-0 against Michigan, having won 56-27 in Ann Arbor in 2019. The 2020 game was canceled due to a substantial number of Wolverines either contracting COVID-19 or being subject to contact tracing with those who had tested positive.

Now that the Philadelphia Eagles have a coaching vacancy, it’s rumored they could turn to Day, who was on staff as a QB coach there two years before he landed in Columbus.

It would be an interesting turn of developments, especially given the attrition Ohio State will face this offseason. Quarterback Justin Fields, cornerback Shaun Wade and others will certainly move on to the NFL. Still, the Buckeyes have recruited quite well, so no matter who Day’s replacement would be if he were to move onto the NFL, they’d be playing with a stacked deck.
