USA TODAY Sports lists Texas in way-too-early Top 25 college football rankings

In the way-too-early college football rankings for the 2021 season, USA TODAY Sports lists Texas at No. 20 overall.

As is every year, the hype surrounding the Texas football program is through the roof.

Most of the high expectations this offseason are centered around newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and his impressive tree of assistant coaches. They’re not only some of the best position coaches across the college football landscape, they’re also excellent recruiters.

Sarkisian is an experienced offensive mind who should open things up for this Longhorns offense. Running back Bijan Robinson will likely become a Heisman contender in 2021, while Joshua Moore has to be ecstatic after witnessing what Sarkisian was able to do with Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith.

Before Sarkisian puts Texas in a position to compete in the College Football Playoff, the Longhorns will need to secure a Big 12 title — something they were unable to do under former head coach Tom Herman.

In USA TODAY Sports way-too-early college football rankings for the 2021 season, two other Big 12 programs were listed ahead of Texas. The Longhorns landed at No. 20 overall.

The ousting of Tom Herman and arrival of Steve Sarkisian will make for an interesting culture change in Austin. Sam Ehlinger also departs, leaving a huge hole at quarterback. Casey Thompson, who starred in the Alamo Bowl, and Hudson Card get the first chance to be the starter in an offense that should be more aggressive downfield. Running back Bijan Robinson should be a star if the offensive line can provide enough holes and he gets enough carries. There are pieces on defense to build around if someone can bring them together.

Other Big 12 teams in the ranking:

  • Oklahoma Sooners – No. 3
  • Iowa State Cyclones – No. 6
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys – No. 23
