Minnesota at Iowa: Three things to know

  1. Minnesota beat then-No. 5 Iowa 102-95 in overtime as a 6.5-point home underdog Christmas Day. Senior F Brandon Johnson hit four 3-pointers in OT and finished with 26 points and 9 rebounds for the Golden Gophers. Junior G Marcus Carr added a team-high 30 points with a game-high 8 assists. The Hawkeyes received 32 points and 17 rebounds, both game-highs, from senior C Luka Garza.
  2. Minnesota lost at No. 9 Michigan (10-0) as a 7.5-point underdog Wednesday, three days after cruising past then-No. 20 Ohio State 77-60 at home. Carr was the only Gophers player to score in double-figures (14 points) vs. the Wolverines as Minnesota shot just 32.4% from the field (22-for-68) and was outrebounded 40-31. Carr leads the Gophers in points (21.5 per game) and assists (5.6 APG), while junior C Liam Robbins is the top rebounder (7.3 RPG) and blocker (2.7 BPG).
  3. The Hawkeyes have run off three consecutive wins since the loss in Minneapolis. They’re coming off back-to-back road wins: 77-75 at then-No. 13 Rutgers as 3.5-point favorites Jan. 2, and 89-67 at Maryland as 5.5-point favorites Thursday. Garza, whose 27.2 PPG lead the country (among qualified players), scored game-highs in both victories – 25 vs. the Scarlet Knights and 24 vs. the Terrapins.

Minnesota at Iowa: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 85, Minnesota 71

Money line (ML)

AVOID. It’s not wise to risk 5 times your potential return with Iowa (-500), and I don’t see Minnesota (+375) winning.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA -9.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Hawkeyes are one of the best home teams in the country. They’re 8-0 straight-up and 7-1 ATS at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, winning by 27.8 PPG and covering the spread by 8.6 PPG.

The Gophers are 0-3 SU and 0-3 ATS on the road, losing by an average of 21.3 PPG and failing to cover by 13.0 PPG.

Plus, the Hawkeyes haven’t forgotten the overtime loss on Christmas Day. Revenge will be sweet Sunday afternoon.

ATS: Minnesota 6-6-1 | Iowa 8-4

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 162.5 (-110) is the way to go. While the Hawkeyes rank third in scoring at 92.4 PPG – behind top-ranked Gonzaga (96.1) and The Citadel (92.9) – they averaged 78.5 PPG in their two Big Ten home games. They beat Northwestern 87-72 Dec. 29 and knocked off Purdue 70-55 Dec. 22.

The Gophers average 79.7 PPG but only 60.3 PPG in their three conference road games.

O/U records: Minnesota 7-6 | Iowa 9-3
