Adam Schefter believes ‘most natural spot’ for Cam Newton would be Washington

Adam Schefter thinks Cam could get between $40 to $50 million over a two-year deal.

Cam Newton’s future will certainly be a main headline for months to come.

Will the 31-year-old stay with the New England Patriots or will he find a new home? Many, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, have vocalized the thought that the Patriots will have a new signal-caller in 2021. Given the fact Newton was on a one-year deal worth $1 million, it’s hard to think the Patriots would suddenly pay him big money following the 2020 season.

Newton finished the year with a 7-8 record, which is actually incredible due to the circumstances. But, he only threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and ten interceptions. On a positive note, Newton ran the ball 137 times for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns — averaging 4.3 yards per carry.

Because of his ability to still score and lead a team, Schefter believes that Newton could join the Washington Football Team next season on roughly a two-year deal that could produce up to $50 million with incentives.

This is all opinion-based and it likely stems from all the factors that would play into Newton’s hands. Washington’s head coach is Ron Rivera, who began coaching the Carolina Panthers in 2011 and left in 2019 — the same exact years as Newton. Washington’s defense was second in yards allowed per game (304.6) and was a good quarterback away from being a playoff team.

Washington released Dwayne Haskins a few weeks ago and Alex Smith isn’t the quarterback of the future for this team. Taylor Heinicke is the next-best option at the position, so a quarterback will be top priority. All of these scenarios lead to a perfect reunion for Newton and Rivera.

The Patriots may attempt to keep Newton next season, but there’s belief the Patriots will search for another veteran quarterback. Bill Belichick has a ton of enormous decisions to make, starting with the quarterback position.
