Lions sign CB Josh Hawkins to practice squad, place CB Alex Myers on Practice Squad I.R.

The Detroit Lions announced they have signed corner Josh Hawkins to the practice squad and placed corner Alex Myers on the Practice Squad injured reserve.

The Detroit Lions announced they have signed corner Josh Hawkins to the practice squad and placed corner Alex Myers on the practice squad injured reserve.

Myers signed on to the Lions practice squad in early December, was elevated to the game-day roster in Week 15, but remained on the practice squad last week. This late in the season, an injury doesn’t have to be long term in order to land o I.R., because even if it makes him unavailable for a week, that’s enough to prompt a roster move.

Hawkins will take Myers spot on the practice squad, but with five corners ahead of him on the depth chart and less than a week to acclimate to the scheme, this transaction looks more like the team angling for a potential futures deal.

Undrafted in 2016 out of East Carolina, Hawkins (5-10, 190) initially signed with the Green Bay Packers and played in 26 games, starting three, over his first two seasons in the league. In 2018, Hawkins split his season between the Panthers and Eagles organizations but was active for just six games and recorded no stats.

After leaving the Eagles in 2019, Hawkins joined the XFL Dallas Renegades, and after the league’s abrupt end he re-joined the Panthers practice squad in 2020. He was released in late October before joining the Lions today.
