Justin Fields on pace to break Colt McCoy’s single season completion record

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is closing in on Colt McCoy’s single season completion record.

Colt McCoy’s name still floods the University of Texas record books.

At the time McCoy departed to the NFL Draft, he held 47 school records — career (16), single-season (13), single-game (five), freshman (six) and miscellaneous (seven).

The beloved signal caller finished his career on the Forty Acres with an impressive record of 45-8 in 53 career starts. After redshirting his freshman season, he took over as the starter in 2006 and never looked back. McCoy led Texas to the national championship game following the 2009 season and just narrowly missed out on the same berth at the conclusion of the 2008 season.

The success that he achieved throughout his five-year collegiate career at Texas is no secret, but McCoy took it a step further to etch his name in the NCAA record books as well.

One of the most impressive records that McCoy still holds is his single season completion percentage of 76.7 in 2008. Fast forward 12 years later, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is now on pace to surpass that number.

McCoy’s number appears a bit tougher to achieve considering he played in 13 games throughout the 2008 season. Fields has played in just five games up to this point in 2020 and has a chance to play in eight total if he leads Ohio State to the national championship game.

For reference, McCoy attempted 433 passes during that single season span while Fields has attempted 137 total passes. It’s certainly an impressive feat for both players, but it’s also a reminder of just how talented of a passer that McCoy was.
