Texas CB Josh Thompson will return for 2021 season

Texas cornerback Josh Thompson announced his decision to return for the 2021 season.

While it seems as if every update includes a player declaring for the NFL Draft or entering the transfer portal, Texas finally received some positive news on Monday.

Fourth-year defensive back Josh Thompson announced via Twitter that he will be returning for the 2021 season. Thompson is currently considered a redshirt junior after being sidelined for the majority of the 2019 season due to a fractured foot.

After specializing on special teams and at nickel back over his first three years, Thompson switched positions to cornerback this offseason under new defensive coordinator Chris Ash where he quickly climbed the depth chart.

Thompson started eight games in 2020 and finished with 25 tackles, three tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries, two passes broken up, and one interception.

Although Texas will be losing two of their top safeties in Caden Sterns and Chris Brown, the Longhorns will be returning both starting cornerbacks. Thompson will likely be the oldest and most experienced athlete in Texas’ secondary next season.
