Boston College at Virginia: Three things to know
- Boston College took down Louisville 34-27 at home as 1-point favorites. Eagles backup QB Dennis Grosel threw 2 pivotal touchdowns in the fourth quarter after replacing an injured QB Phil Jurkovec in the third quarter. Jurkovec is listed as the starter heading into this week’s game vs. the Cavaliers.
- Virginia has been on a roll in recent games, winning three straight and covering four in a row. The Cavaliers had last week’s meeting against Florida State canceled due to COVID concerns within the Seminoles and haven’t played since Nov. 21.
- Boston College is 6-0 all-time vs. Virginia, but the last time they’ve played was in 2017 (41-10 win by Boston College).

Boston College at Virginia: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks
Prediction
Virginia 34, Boston College 27
Money line (ML)
Virginia is the side for me, but its money line is too expensive for me to bet outright. If you wanted to take Virginia’s money line, I’d recommend putting them into a money line parlay with another similarly priced favorite. For this game specifically, I’ll PASS.
Against the spread (ATS)
Boston College’s 6-2 record and Clemson narrowly beating them 34-28 as 26-point favorites is skewing the line in my opinion. Virginia’s coach Bronco Mendenhall won 70% of his games while at BYU, and he has the Cavaliers football program trending up.
I get Virginia isn’t a powerhouse program, and they’ve never beaten Boston College, but there’s going to be a lot of pressure on this Eagles passing attack. Virginia is allowing less than 4 yards per rush, and Boston College is ranked 107th in yards per rush. Also, the Eagles haven’t beaten a good team all year.
The Cavaliers will be able to control the tempo of this game and stay on schedule with a rushing attack that’s ranked 44th in yards per game going against a Boston College rush defense that’s ranked 113th in opponents’ yards per game.
Also, this is a spot where we can fade the market: 81% of the money wagered is on Boston College, which has brought it down from Virginia laying a full touchdown to the current number (according to Pregame.com).
The line has moved too much, and I’ll TAKE VIRGINIA -3.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.
Over/Under (O/U)
Virginia’s offense has been better than people recognize and have 44, 31 and 55 over its past three games. The Cavaliers are 6-2 Over/Under this season. Plus Boston College’s passing offense can have success against a Virginia pass defense that is 116th in opponents ‘passing yards per game.
Admittedly, I don’t have a great feel for this total, though, so I’ll just lean OVER 55.5 (-105) for a quarter-unit.
