Florida redshirt senior quarterback Kyle Trask played at Manville High School for head coach Kirk Martin.
Martin left Manville to take a position at Syracuse, serving as quarterbacks coach from 2018-19.
He has since returned to the state of Texas and is in his first season as head coach at Colleyville Heritage High School.
Martin has also coached the likes of Tommy DeVito and Eric Dungey at Syracuse, as well as Trask (Florida), D’Eriq King (Houston/Miami), Travaughn Colwell (New Mexico State), Dexter Foreman (Minnesota/Maryland) and his son, Kason Martin (North Texas).
Ahead of Tennessee’s matchup with Florida Saturday, Martin joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” to discuss coaching Trask.
He described the Gators’ signal-caller as a “football junkie.”
“He is having a great year and really putting together a Heisman-type of year,” Martin said of Trask. “His numbers right now are ahead of the guys that won the Heisman the last four or five years, as far as their numbers go, as far as passing.
“The kid is a stud, a great, great young man. Just a terrific leader, a great teammate, really hard worker and has all the tools.”
Trask played in an Air Raid offense under Martin at Manville. His time in Martin’s offense has helped him understand and to be able to operate at a high level within Dan Mullen’s offense at Florida.
Martin said it has “certainly” helped Trask having prior experience executing all go plays.
“Everybody runs the shallow Y-Cross, which is Air Raid stuff, and they’re doing that at Florida,” Martin said. “He’s been taught from an early age how to read a flat defender and figure out where to go with the ball. He has been a a progression read guy.
“I think having played at a very high level in high school certainly has helped him with success there at Florida. Dan Mullen has taken it to a whole new level. He has done unbelievably well with Kyle. Kyle really fits his offense well.”
Trask has totaled 2,810 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and three interceptions through eight games this season. 2020 is Trask’s first season as the Gators’ full-time starter after appearing in 12 games (10 starts) last year and playing in four contests during the 2018 campaign.
