The Miami Marlins just made a whole bunch of history with their hire of Kim Ng as their new general manager.
She is officially the first woman to ever be hired as a general manager in the history of Major League Baseball. She’s also the first Asian American to get a GM job in Major League Baseball.
This is groundbreaking. But, really, Ng has been ready for this job for years.
Ng has been MLB’s senior vice president of baseball operations for the last nine years and she’s been an assistant general manager for both the Yankees and the Dodgers. She’s been in the front office for eight playoff teams in her career and helped build three World Series championship teams.
The Marlins announced the hire on Twitter.

She’s interviewed for a few different general manager spots in the past but never landed the job — until now. And it’s about time.
Fans, media and players from the baseball world praised the hire.
Welcome to Miami Kim, excited to go to work with you and bring a championship to this city 👊🏼 https://t.co/FB8PwSZKDz

Forget just baseball. A woman never has been the general manager of a major American professional sports team period until Kim Ng was hired by the Miami Marlins today. Their COO is Caroline O'Connor. The Marlins' three highest-ranking officials are two women and an ex-shortstop.

Kim Ng has 3 World Series rings. She made 8 postseason appearances as an executive. She was assistant GM of the #Yankees and #Dodgers, then spent a decade in the Commissioner’s office. Objectively speaking, she has one of the greatest résumés of any first-time GM in @MLB history.

Kim Ng was hired by the Yankees as an assistant GM in 1998. She became an AGM with the Dodgers in 2001. She first interviewed for a GM job in 2005. That is what we call a Baseball Lifer.

Let's be perfectly clear here. Kim Ng has been among the most qualified GM candidates for the past two decades. She has always been capable of running a Major League team. This isn't a risky hire — it's a smart one, by a team that obviously wants to win a World Series.

I've known Kim Ng since 2006. She was the smartest, toughest, and most rational person in the Dodgers front office from day one. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS OMFG I AM JUMPING AROUND AT 7:45 AM. A BRILLIANT WOMAN WILL RUN A BASEBALL TEAM.

Kim Ng as the first woman general manager in MLB is excellent for baseball. I like how she worked with poor kids in Florida. Her work with 8 playoff teams resulted in 3 WS rings!
