Newest Oklahoma commit, former Texas commit, takes jab at Longhorns’ coaching staff

There’s nothing like the OU-Texas rivalry. Even when it comes to recruiting.

Oklahoma landed a huge win on the recruiting trail whenever Billy Bowman de-committed from Texas and ended up flipping to the Sooners. He is rated as the 34th best player in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 1 athlete according to Rivals.

Bowman was committed to Texas for over a year. The Longhorns started to trend in a bad direction in 2020 with head coach Tom Herman being squarely on the hot seat.

It was clear that was part of the reason for the flip, as Bowman told the Denton Record-Chronicle that being around coaches who know what they are doing was important.

“I feel like Oklahoma checked every single one of my bullet points,” Bowman said. “One of them was being able to play on one of the biggest stages in college football. I also wanted to be closer to home, be around coaches who know what they are doing, and be around a championship program. I feel like I made the right decision for me, my family and my future.”

He is being recruited as an athlete and his eventual position at Oklahoma is still up in the air. Bowman went into a little bit of his thought process about where he wants to play at the next level.

“Anyone who knows who coach (Lincoln) Riley is knows he is an offensive genius,” Bowman said. “I’m leaning toward offense, and I had conversations with him that if I can’t get on the field right away on offense, I’m willing to play defense.”

And it doesn’t sound like this a recruit Oklahoma is going to have to worry about moving forward.

“I’m set,” Bowman said of his decision. “With this being my senior year, none of us knows how many games we can get. I just want to be out there and win a state championship with my brothers.”
