As the New England Patriots struggle through the 2020 season, some interesting theories in regards to shaking up the organization have surfaced. Could trading Bill Belichick be the wildest of them all? One national analyst indicates that the idea is something that is at least worth pondering.
Peter King indicated that he didn’t think it would be the worst idea. His biggest question in regards to a potential Bill Belichick trade would be the return for the Patriots.
One of King’s major reasons for trading Belichick is his age. With that being said, King isn’t sure as to whether Belichick would want to move at this point in his career.
“I also don’t think that you’re probably going to get the value that you want, that you would think you would get,” King said, per WEEI.com “Like, probably right now, you would think if you traded Bill Belichick, you should get two (first-round picks), you think that’s about right? Especially not really knowing how much longer Bill is going to coach, he’s getting up there in years and you don’t really know how much longer he’s going to coach, so are you going to trade two (first-round picks) for a guy who might only coach for four years? I think it’s an interesting thing. I don’t think it’s something you should dismiss out of hand.”
It would be interesting if the Patriots traded Belichick. After all, they acquired him in a trade with the New York Jets for the 16th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. It’s safe to say that New England got the better end of that deal.
