The 2020 College Football season has been far from noarmal. most conferences have chosen to play a shortened, conference-only season, a few have decided to play in the spring season and some declined to attempt a season, all due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
As recently seen in the NFL, teams have outbreaks, which spreads throughought the team and staff, causing potential transmission across the league and forcing games to be rescheduled, postponed or canceled all together.
The virus has made its way into the SEC and is now infecting athletes and personell, affecting scheduled games and potentially threatening the season.
Announced today, reported by Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, Saturday’s Week 4 SEC contest between LSU and Florida has been postponed due to an outbreak within Florida’s program. The game has been rescheduled for Dec. 12.
This marks the second SEC game to be postponed within the last few days because of coronavirus, Missouri and Venderbilt’s upcoming matchup has been postponed due to the coronavirus.
Today, Matt Zenitz of AL.com reported on an outbreak within the Ole Miss football program, quoting Lane Kiffin saying, “We’re just trying to manage it the best we can.”
The surfacing of this news draws into question whether Ole Miss will be able to play their scheduled game against Akansas this weekend.
However, more questioned ought to be brought up about the potential exposure to members of the Alabama football team after their Week 3 contest against Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi just a few days ago.
While Ole Miss players may have just recently tested positive, or have been exposed, there’s a strong chance they were infected prior to testing. Considering football is a close-contact sport, there’s a strong possibility of transmission of an infected player interacted with members of Alabama’s team.
There’s no official word yet from the Crimson Tide’s program on any current positive tests, or if certain protocols are being taken in order to ensure the health and safety of the players that may have been infected during last Saturday’s game.
