Just when you think you’ve got Russell Wilson where you want him, the best quarterback in football steps on your toes on the way to the end zone, and you stand embarrassed. On Sunday night, the Vikings did their level best to limit Wilson as much as they could, and they did so in the only way any opponent can consistently do it — they kept him off the field. Minnesota exposited Seattle’s leaky run defense, amassing 201 yards on 41carries, and won the time of possession battle, 39:18 to 20:32.
There was only one problem: With two minutes left in the game, up 26-21, head coach Mike Zimmer signed off on one too many rushing attempts. On fourth down from the Seattle six-yard line, the Vikings ran Alexander Mattison for no gain, and the Seahawks took over with 94 yards to gain to win the game.
At that point, if you’ve watched Russell Wilson all season, it was automatic. The Vikings Let Russ Cook, and they lived to regret it. Wilson completed a 39-yard pass to receiver D.K. Metcalf on fourth-and-10 to extend the drive…

“The defense has been so clutch in crucial moments this year,” Wilson told NBC’s Michele Tafoya after the game. “We just believed that if we got the ball back, something great was going to happen. And we just said that on the sideline — stay neutral, and keep believing. We made a crucial catch by D.K. on fourth down — what an unbelievable catch. We went up and down the field there, and we had a couple chances to score early on, but it actually worked out better that we scored on the last play there on fourth down. It’s always a heavyweight fight.”
And in the NFL of 2020, Russell Wilson is the heavyweight champion. Week 5 just proved it all over again.
