The Kansas City Chiefs will get some reinforcements in the secondary this week.
Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland has officially served his four-game suspension and is set to be removed from the suspended list by the commissioner this week. It comes at a good time for Kansas City as standout rookie CB L’Jarius Sneed was placed on injured reserve with a collarbone injury just last week.
Shortly after the Chiefs concluded their Week 4 game against the New England Patriots, Breeland posted a message on his Instagram page. It’s clear that he’s excited to get back out there with his teammates. It’s not a music video, but you should check it out anyways:
Breeland was the starting left cornerback for the Chiefs during their Super Bowl-winning season. He finished the 2019 season with 15 games started, recording 48 total tackles, two interceptions and eight passes defended. It’s unclear if Breeland will immediately reclaim a starting job. Right now, even in relief, the cornerbacks in Kansas City are playing well.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke a bit about Rashad Fenton and Breeland’s return after the Week 4 win over the Patriots.
“Yeah, Fenton did a nice job with it,” Reid told reporters. “With the exception of the one fade route in the fourth quarter I believe it was, he had big plays, a big interception down the stretch there. That was a beautiful play and he had a couple other breakups that were really good, so it’s good. You can’t have enough of those guys. You need corners, and Bashaud comes back this week, so it’ll be good to get him back in the mix, too.”
It’s entirely possible that the Chiefs ease Breeland back into action and have him take up a tertiary role until he’s eventually needed. As Reid said, you can never have enough corners. We’ve seen that put to the test this season in Kansas City.
