At the moment, while we wait for Michigan to open up the 2020 season at Minnesota on Oct. 24, all we know about Joe Milton are annals of potential and hyperbole.
Milton can launch the ball unlike any quarterback Michigan has ever had, easily throwing for 70 yards, we’re told. Josh Gattis has sung his praises. Urban Meyer, too. His teammates have followed suit. Same with defensive coordinator Don Brown, who’s applauded his curiosity.
But a lot is riding on Milton and his cannon arm, and a good person to tell you about him is his 2018 recruiting classmate in Jalen Mayfield, as he had opted out but chose to return for a final season in Ann Arbor. You could imagine that making such a decision would also carry the weight of knowing you’d have a chance to succeed on offense.
So what does Mayfield think of Milton? Speaking with BTN’s Mike Hall, he spoke less about the lore that’s followed the third-year quarterback and more about his demeanor, leadership and work ethic.
Given that that’s a huge component to finding success, it’s exactly the type of thing Michigan football fans will want to hear.
“When we first came in, just watching up to him, you wouldn’t think the guy plays quarterback,” “He’s a big dude, very talented. He’s very athletic. But what I’ve seen over the past three years is a guy who wants to be great, who wants to be the best. The amount of work that he’s put in from when we first got here until now is remarkable. He really pushes himself and pushes everybody to be their absolute best. I’m just glad to have him as a quarterback and as a leader on our team.”
