Devin McCourty explains what makes the Chiefs a fun opponent

Yes, Devin McCourty apparently enjoys his matchups with the Chiefs.

Devin McCourty apparently enjoys his matchups with the Kansas City Chiefs. For a defensive player, that’s downright insane. The Chiefs are one of the fastest offenses in the history of the NFL. Patrick Mahomes is one of the most gifted passers in history (and is quickly adding accomplishments like NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP to his resume).

But alas, McCourty has an explanation. He was asked what he thinks about the fact that the Chiefs can come back from any deficit, as they showed in the playoffs last year against the Houston Texans and in the Super Bowl versus San Francisco.

“Honestly, it’s fun. You know, I think of it when these two teams go at each other, it doesn’t matter who’s up,” McCourty said Wednesday. “You know, we’ve been down in games and we’ve come back. They’ve been down and they’ve come back.  It’s very similar to the conversation we had with Seattle two weeks ago. We just play Kansas City a lot more than we play Seattle. But all of the games have been like that. we fight this team. And it wasn’t since Patrick Mahomes. Even when Alex Smith was there, we would have battles where, you know, we’d be up and they come back or, you know, they’d be up or we come back.”

When Tom Brady was at quarterback for New England, he and Mahomes had a pair of shootouts in 2018, one in the regular season and one in the postseason. New England won both contests by less than a touchdown. In 2019, however, Mahomes got his revenge with a 23-16 win over New England, though not without Brady nearly staging a comeback.

“I would say it’s a game that no matter what, both sides know, ‘Hey, this is gonna be a 60-minute game where we got to fight and keep going,'” McCourty said. “You know, that game last year, I think I at one point they were up 23-7 on us. And the game really came down to our last drive. Get all the way down I want to say maybe I saw the 10- or 15-yard line and them stopping us. So it really doesn’t matter which team has the lead I’d say both teams are coached very well and both teams know that, hey, we’re going to compete all the way to the end.”

With Cam Newton now at quarterback, it will be interesting to see if his new-look Patriots offense can keep pace with Mahomes in the same way that Brady did.
