A day before LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers took a 2-0 lead over the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, LeBron’s name made headlines in a sport he doesn’t play after an event played across the country from the NBA Bubble in Orlando.
UFC welterweight fighter Colby Covington won his UFC Main Event on Saturday night over Tyron Woodley. After the fight, Covington, who is a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, decided it was the right time to call out some other athletes he has an issue with for being “woke.” He then called LeBron James a “spineless coward.”
Obviously, the political and racial motivations behind such statements are quite clear. LeBron James and the NBA have been vocal in their support of Black Lives Matter since the NBA season restarted, while LeBron in particular has made a concerted effort to use his platform as a way to demand equal rights and access to voting for Black Americans, through his new More Than A Vote organization. More than anything, it seems like Covington is upset about James actually getting things done.
