Bills quarterback Josh Allen has had a heck of a start to his 2020 campaign. It’s all but a formality at this point, but once Monday Night Football between the Raiders and Saints concludes, Allen will be the NFL’s leader in passing yards following two games. That is, unless either Derek Carr or Drew Brees throws for about 500 yards in that game.
Allen currently has a league-high 729 passing yards.
Despite that, Allen stans, or supporters to the rest of us, are going to have to hit the yoga mat this week. You’re going to have to remain calm, cool, and collected.
Yes, the quarterback is on the right track, but unfortunately, the job is not over. Allen can only play the slate put in front of him. The NFL decided to start the Bills with the Jets and Dolphins, respectively. Allen and the Bills kicked the crap out of them in those two games which had final scores that were not as close as the scoreboard read at the final whistle.
The naysayers will point to these two teams begin below average rosters. In doing so, they’re probably right, but that doesn’t take anything away from the quarterback.
So just take a little advice and enjoy 417 yards from Allen, him showing he doesn’t have to just rely on his legs in a game after rushing only twice against the Dolphins, and his ability to spread the ball around by completing touchdown passes to four different receivers. The offense, overall, even carried the defense. We don’t see that often, especially in Buffalo.
But try not to work yourself up. If you’re truly believing in Allen, by the time the season is over, you’ll get your answer on him one way or another. Heck, even before then you’ll get it.
The road is going to get much tougher, and undoubtedly tougher in a sense of…. if Allen shows well as the season carries on, there will be no denying it.
Up next, the Bills host the Rams. In a meeting between 2-0 teams, having fans in Bills Stadium would have been nice. In Week 5, a stout Titans defense awaits Allen and Buffalo. Then a primetime meeting with the Chiefs sits in Week 6, two weeks ago of a mid-sesason Week 8 meeting with the Patriots.
That’s not to overlook the Raiders and Jets who Buffalo also has to face before the mid-point of their campaign. Like the first two games of the season, Buffalo has to play the hand their dealt and they’ll have to win those games to remain convincing.
But even if you’re ticked off by any Allen doubters after two games… just hang tight.
You’ve waited over two decades to find a franchise quarterback and there might be one right under your nose. Just wait a few weeks and you’ll have a potential lifetime of reminding folks they were wrong about your QB.
