The 49ers beat the Jets 31-13 in an ugly game that saw a number of key players go down with injuries. San Francisco moved to 1-1 on the season.
Here are our notes from throughout the contest.
– The 49ers are wearing their home reds on the road and it is a strange look.
– Jerick McKinnon fields the opening kickoff. He returned kick last week with Richie James Jr. out.
– Welp. That was fast. Toss right to Mostert who follows his blocks and goes 80 yards for a touchdown. Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner were the two tight ends on the right side. Mostert is fast, FYI. 49ers 7, Jets 0.
– Frank Gore is awesome. He plows ahead for a five-yard gain on his first carry of the game.
– DJ Jones and Solomon Thomas are the starters on the interior of the defensive line.
– Jimmy Garoppolo’s first throw of the game is to Jordan Reed who made a nice juggling catch. Brandon Aiyuk was in motion on the snap. Expecting more of that from the rookie.
– More third-down issues for the 49ers to open this one. Garoppolo is sacked on third-and-8 and came up limping pretty badly. It looks like Laken Tomlinson got beat for the sack. That one isn’t on the quarterback.
– Garoppolo is getting his right ankle taped during the 49ers’ second defensive possession.
– Nick Bosa is a really good run defender.
– A first down throw for Sam Darnold. Ahkello Witherspoon gets beat by Breshad Perriman.
– Kerry Hyder Jr. gets a tackle-for-loss. He had a strong showing in Week 1 as well. The 49ers need a good game from him with Dee Ford out.
– Yikes. The 49ers pass rush gets home but Javon Kinlaw and Arik Armstead both whiff on sacks and Darnold runs ahead for a first down.
– Now Nick Bosa goes down. Just a disastrous start to the year from an injury perspective for the 49ers. He’s carted off.
– Solomon Thomas is down now. Unbelievable.
– The 49ers defense comes up with a sack by Arik Armstead to put the Jets in a third-and-long. They settle for a 41-yard field goal. 49ers 7. Jets 3.
– Wow. It was a 67-yard touchdown for Mostert but a holding penalty on Mike McGlinchey brings it back.
– Well there’s Garoppolo. The 49ers go empty and Tevin Coleman hauls in a 22-yard strike over the middle on a second-and-20. Getting more from Coleman this week would be huge.
– Brandon Aiyuk makes his first NFL reception by flashing in front of Kendrick Bourne to make an eight-yard catch on a third-and-6. Garoppolo does a nice job escaping pressure and extending the play to his right and then throwing a strike on the run.
– Another third-down conversion. This time it’s Jordan Reed for 11 yards on a third-and-9. He’s been more involved than he was in Week 1.
– It looks like Garoppolo is limping pretty bad after a throw to Mostert.
– Another third-down conversion. This one results in a touchdown. Garoppolo hits Reed on a short throw, and then Reed shows his athleticism to avoid a tackle, tiptoe the sideline and get in. 49ers 14, Jets 3.
– The 49ers defense is struggling to get off the field on third down. New York has started five-for-seven.
– There’s a third and fourth-down stop. The Jets go for it on fourth-and-1 from the 49ers’ 20 and Fred Warner gets in the backfield to blow the play up. That’s a huge stop for a depleted defense.
– Oof. A deep shot from Garoppolo to Bourne falls incomplete. It was a nice throw, Bourne just couldn’t quite haul it in against good coverage. Would’ve been a great catch.
– There’s Bourne on a third-and-3. He makes the catch for plenty, but turns it upfield for an 18-yard pickup. Bourne is money on third downs.
– Another third down conversion. This one to Trent Taylor for nine on a third-and-2.
– Garoppolo tries making a back-foot throw to Aiyuk on a third-and-8, but it falls incomplete. A roughing the passer extends their drive though and puts them on New York’s 21 with under a minute to go in the half.
– Reed scores again on a third down. On third-and-goal from the 4, Garoppolo finds Reed at the 2, and the big tight end fights his way in for his second score of the game and a 21-3 lead before the half.
– Garoppolo heads to the locker room a bit early. So does Mostert. Not great.
– That is a bad sign. Garoppolo didn’t join the team coming out of the locker room. Per the Fox broadcast, Garoppolo is getting X-rays at the half and they’ll evaluate him to see if he’ll return.
– Jimmie Ward is awesome. He stuffs a quick throw on third down short.
– Nick Mullen is in to start the second half. Garoppolo and Mostert are both out for the game.
– Wow. Jerick McKinnon on a third-and-31 goes for 55 yards. That’s an unbelievable run that helps set up points for San Francisco. A Robbie Gould 46-yard field goal puts the 49ers up three touchdowns. 49ers 24, Jets 3
– This defense has been flying since Bosa and Thomas went down. Arik Armstead forces a Jets punt with a batted pass as New York tried to set up a screen.
– And the 49ers drive ends on an interception. Mullens didn’t step into his throw and fires high and behind McKinnon. The Jets get the ball at the 49ers’ 22-yard-line. If the Jets are going to come back it’s because of bad turnovers like that.
– Kerry Hyder is slow to get up now. This game can’t end fast enough.
– The Jets just kicked a field goal from inside the 10 with 2:52 left in the third quarter to make it a 24-6 game. That doesn’t make a ton of sense. Good work by the 49ers defense to get a stop after the Mullens turnover.
– Some good news! Hyder is back.
– The third quarter mercifully ends. These final 15 minutes need to fly.
– Bourne hauls one in for 24 yards. He’s having a nice game. That was his fourth catch for 67 yards.
– Aiyuk again with a nice catch on a short throw. He does a great job to break a tackle and find more yards. He’s now at 21 yards on two catches.
– An exclamation point for the 49ers. McKinnon finds pay dirt from 18 yards out and the 49ers are up four scores. 49ers 31, Jets 6
– Dre Greenlaw is down after the kickoff. He got up and limped off under his own power.
– The Jets try on a fourth-and-7. Chris Hogan was open, but Emmanuel Moseley does a nice job to shove him out and break up the pass before Hogan could get his feet down.
– Justin Skule takes over at left tackle for Trent Williams. That’s probably the right move for the 49ers to get Williams off the field. Hroniss Grasu is in at center for Ben Garland and sixth-round pick Colton McKivitz is working at right guard for Daniel Brunskill.
– The Jets score with 1:23 left. A person named Braxton Berrios beats Witherspoon. Richard Sherman can’t come back soon enough. 49ers 31, Jets 13
– Kneel downs. Ball game. That was rough.
