KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the history of the program.

Tennessee has a losing record on this date as it is 2-3. UT has played three games away from home and just two in the friendly confines of Neyland Stadium. The Vols are 0-2 at home on this date.

The Vols first played on Sept. 12 in 1981. That game was against the University of Southern California at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Trojans protected their home turf, coming off the field with a 43-7 victory.

In 1987, the Vols went to Starkville and nabbed a 38-10 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference contest.

In 1992, the Big Orange invaded Athens and edged Georgia, 34-31, when the Bulldogs were ranked No. 14 in the nation.

In 2009, the Vols dropped a 19-15 decision to UCLA at home.

UT last played on Sept. 12 in 2015 and the Vols lost at home to Oklahoma, 31-24.
