There are few things that ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum seemingly enjoys more than dunking on Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, and a report that Harbaugh accused Ryan Day of breaking the rules during a Big Ten coaches’ call this week gave Finebaum another reason to roast the embattled Wolverines head coach.
Earlier this week, Bucknuts reported that during a Big Ten conference call that was closed to the media, Harbaugh said that Ohio State has engaged in on-field instruction of players, which is not yet allowed. Day responded by telling Harbaugh to worry about his own team, and according to ESPN, Day later told his players privately that they were going to “hang 100” on Michigan later this year. Harbaugh, of course, is 0-5 against Ohio State as a head coach.
During an appearance on First Take, Finebaum unloaded on Harbaugh, calling his actions petty.
Charly Caruso: “How does this make Harbaugh look?”
Paul Finebaum: “Stupid.”
It gets even more ruthless from there.
“It’s great that Jim Harbaugh cares about rules that nobody else cares about, but for the audience that doesn’t understand what’s really going on here, Jim Harbaugh was brought back to Michigan a number of years ago, paid $8 million dollars a year, and the sole purpose was to beat Ohio State. That’s the goal at the University of Michigan. Guess what? He hasn’t done it! He really hasn’t come all that close other than one year when he blew a game that may have cost the Wolverines a shot at the national championship.
And last year in Ann Arbor, a lot of people thought ‘maybe this was the year.’ And Ryan Day, in his first year after taking over for Urban Meyer, just wiped the floors with Jim Harbaugh.
…. It is a complete and total embarrassment. The fact that Jim Harbaugh even has a job these days… is for another question, another day. Jim Harbaugh just can’t get out of his own way. He wakes up in the morning and seemingly says ‘how am I going to call more attention to myself, to the fact that I can’t beat Ohio State?'”
Ohio State and Michigan are scheduled to play on October 24th.
