Giants nearly dead last in Pro Football Talk power rankings

The New York Giants nearly bottomed out in the 2020 Pro Football Talk preseason power rankings.

NFL training camps are scheduled to begin on July 28 with rookies reporting in a few short days, which means the preseason is just around the bend.

In preparation for the return of football, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk decided to break out his 2020 preseason power rankings and actually give fans something to digest and discuss other than harping on all the negatives of the world.

Unfortunately for fans of the New York Giants, they won’t be escaping Florio’s persistent pessimism because he’s not very high on the team. In fact, he placed them near the very bottom of his rankings — almost dead last.

29. Giants: Second-year starting quarterback, first-year head coach, offensive coordinator who was just fired as a head coach, defense that lacks significant punch, offensive line that remains a work in progress. Maybe it all finds a way to work. Maybe it doesn’t. (And, yes, someone has to be No. 29.)

If that’s not top-notch analysis, I don’t know what is.

The Giants certainly have a lot working against them as they attempt to come out the other side of this rebuild, and that turnaround has been stunted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost Joe Judge his first offseason as head coach.

Still, other than sporting a first-year head coach and new coaching staff, the Giants are no worse off than any other team. All 32 organizations have had to endure the same hardships this offseason, and Judge will be the first to tell you there are no excuses.

The Giants won’t play the “woe is me” card in 2020 for exactly that reason, and it’s that optimistic and hard-nosed attitude brought on by Joe Judge that may help carry the team to a more successful season than some of the NFL’s pundits expect.
