The Philadelphia Eagles have two of the top tight ends in the NFL and in a league where passing to wideouts is premium, could the Eagles put two tight ends into Pro Bowl consideration?
Zach Ertz is one of the top-three tight ends in the NFL and his running mate, Dallas Goedert, is a top-10 tight end in his own right and a player searching for a breakout season.
In an NFL.com listing of all 32 NFL team’s first-time potential pro bowlers, Goedert landed the nod for the Eagles.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: Dallas Goedert, TE, third NFL season: The presence of brilliant tight end Zach Ertz makes this a tricky proposition. Still, Goedert benefited from a 2019 Eagles offense that used the highest percentage (50.6) of plays in 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends, two wide receivers) since the 2011 Patriots. In return, Goedert produced the roster’s second-most catches (58), receiving yards (607) and touchdowns (5). Ertz was first across the board, preventing Goedert from nabbing a clear-cut featured role. It’s an enviable problem for the Eagles, who made every effort to keep both assets in the lineup and should follow suit come September. This is a vote for Goedert’s undiscovered ceiling.
Goedert has quickly become one of the best run-blocking tight ends in football and he’s even approaching Zach Ertz’s level of efficiency as a pass-catcher.
Goedert caught 58 balls in 2019, has become a major threat in the end zone, and could be on the cusp of a breakout season after the Eagles promoted Press Taylor to pass game coordinator and added Rich Scangarello to the coaching staff.
With Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson both returning from a season-ending injury, the Eagles 12 personnel of Goedert and Ertz could be the most dynamic formation from the start.
