Always a tough out, but possibly more this fall.

Now that he has spearheaded Wyoming’s longest run of success in 20 years, Craig Bohl is our preseason pick as the Mountain West’s head coach of the year as he and the Cowboys take aim at greater heights in 2020.

It took two years for Bohl to get his foundation in place after arriving in Laramie from North Dakota State, but the Cowboys have now finished four straight seasons at .500 or better, the longest such streak for the program since Joe Tiller and Dana Dimel did so from 1993 to 1999. They’ve also improved their overall SP+ ranking each year since 2016, too, from 95th to 79th to 69th to 66th, proving that the revitalization is no fluke.

Bohl’s successes in 2019 included a season-opening upset of Missouri at War Memorial Stadium, beating rival Colorado State for the fourth straight time, and becoming the first head coach in program history to win multiple bowl games with a runaway victory over Georgia State in the Arizona Bowl.

While there are still important questions to be answered for 2020 — who will start at quarterback, for instance, and how the linebacker unit will reload without Logan Wilson and Cassh Maluia — the next wave of Pokes is already on the rise and there’s no reason not to expect the team to compete for a division crown once again.
