The NBA is set to return after the Board of Governors agreed on the NBA’s return to play plan on Thursday, however, it still doesn’t hurt to look ahead to the offseason a bit.
The NBA Draft is officially now set for October 15 and for the Philadelphia 76ers, they still do currently have the 22nd pick in Round 1 courtesy of the Oklahoma City Thunder. That could change as the Thunder are one of the 2 teams that will be headed to Orlando to finish up the season. If they lose a couple of games, they could tumble and keep the pick since it is top 20 protected. The reason why Philadelphia owns the pick right now is because of their success.
For the time being, the pick does belong to the Sixers and they are once again mocked to select a shooter. Sports Illustrated’s Jeremy Woo has the Sixers selecting Stanford’s Tyrell Terry who shot 40.8% from deep for the Cardinal in 2019-20.
Woo on Terry:
Terry would be an intriguing fit long-term in Philly as a consistent shooter who can play on and off the ball, and who theoretically meshes neatly alongside Ben Simmons. He needs time to get stronger and work on his handle, but has a good case in the back half of the first round as a developmental guard. The Sixers won’t need their first-rounder to play immediately and also have four second-rounders, so they can afford to invest long-term here. Terry’s skill set and ability to play on and off the ball falls in line with the type of guards the Sixers tend to value, and he has attractive upside in this part of the draft.
As noted, the Sixers need shooting in the worst way possible right now. They need that sharpshooter to put next to Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid in order to make the offense work. Terry is a guy who can catch and shoot as well create something for himself off the dribble and that is a very valuable asset for this team at the moment. [lawrence-related id=32598,32585,32578]
