The Panthers have agreed to terms with former Saints cornerback Eli Apple, according to the team website.
Apple spent the last two seasons in New Orleans, but he was picked by the Giants in the 2016 NFL draft. He didn’t last long there though, getting fined by the team for tweeting on the sideline in 2017, then suspended. New York finally traded him to the Saints in October 2018 for fourth and seventh-round draft picks.
All together, Apple (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) has started 48 games in his career, totaling three interceptions, 33 pass breakups and 197 solo tackles.
Most likely, Carolina sees Apple as the best candidate to take over James Bradberry’s former role starting outside opposite Donte Jackson. Fourth-round pick Troy Pride Jr. is another option, but Apple has the advantage when it comes to size and experience.
Apple is one of several former Saints to join the Panthers this year. The others include quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and wide receiver Keith Kirkwood.
