The SEC released a statement which shared that:
“The return of voluntary activity in addition to the extension of the waiver to allow virtual, nonphysical activity shows sensitivity to local, state and regional differences in how Division I campuses are reopening,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. “We will continue to be considerate of these differences with wise and flexible administration of our regulations, and we expect schools to keep the well-being of student-athletes as a priority.”
The SEC also said that the decision was made by the league’s Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force, a cross-section of public health, infectious disease, and of course sports medicine professionals from the 14 member institutions.
This news comes two days after the NCAA also announced that the NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday voted to allow athletes in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball to resume voluntary on-campus workouts, beginning June 1.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey had this to say:
“The safe and healthy return of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and our greater university communities have been and will continue to serve as our guiding principle as we navigate this complex and constantly-evolving situation. At this time, we are preparing to begin the fall sports season as currently scheduled, and this limited resumption of voluntary athletic activities on June 8 is an important initial step in that process.”
This is great news for college football fans who are hoping there will still be a football season.
