The Raiders spent most of their offseason improving the defense as most of their free-agent signings came on that side of the ball. Part of the reasoning was that the offense played well last year, despite several injuries to their receiving corps.
But the Raiders didn’t exactly ignore the offensive side this offseason, either. They spent the No. 12 pick on Henry Ruggs and added playmakers Bryan Edwards and Lynn Bowden on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.
In a recent article by Bleacher Report, the site ranked all of the offenses heading into the 2020 season. The Raiders came at No. 18 despite their additions in free agency and the draft. Take a look at why the site is, however, optimistic about their offense this season:
Looking at 2019 statistics to form a baseline for these rankings, the Raiders stood out as a surprise offense. They were a top-10 offense in DVOA and yards per play, yet they ranked 24th in offensive points per game. In other words, they were efficient and could move the ball, but they didn’t wind up with points. There’s potential to work with if they can find more consistent ways to finish drives. Much of the Raiders’ success can be attributed to big seasons from rookie Josh Jacobs and Darren Waller. Jacobs was one of the most efficient running backs in the NFL with 1,150 yards on the ground and 4.8 yards per carry. Waller was second among tight ends in yards at 1,145. If either can raise his touchdown production, it will help the Raiders outperform this ranking.
Bleacher Report’s biggest concern about the Raiders’ offense in 2020 is the inexperience at receiver with Henry Ruggs and Bryan Edwards. Both players could be thrust into the starting lineup sooner than they are ready. But if they are up for the challenge, the Raiders’ offense could be much better than anyone expects.
More than likely, the Raiders’ offense will likely look the same in 2020. But the hope is that by the end of the season, the new receivers can grow into their roles. In the meantime, look for Josh Jacobs and Darren Waller to carry the offense.
